Cigarettes and Their Allure

I am going to begin with a topic that in this day and age, is perhaps considered edgy… Cigarettes and their allure! While I have not been a smoker in many years, I still find that at times, under the right circumstances, smoking and all it entails can be something romantic, sophisticated and sensual.

I confess that one of my least favorite things is to come home from a night out and find that I smell like an ashtray… However, I recently had a slight change of heart on the whole issue of smoking and dating smokers. I spent a night on the town with a gorgeous man who is heavy smoker; the kind of man that looks like he stepped out a Fellini film. All night long I was enveloped in this haze of second hand smoke… When I returned home in the wee hours of the morning and began to undress, pulling my shirt over my head, I was accosted by the most intoxicating, heady aroma. The smell wrapped itself around me and held me in its tight grasp, confining me to a moment I never wanted to leave. It was the culmination of an evening’s worth of cigarette smoke mingled with my tobacco-scented perfume. The smell was thick and complex. It told a story. In the book, Men In Love, Nancy Friday said, “We do not need or desire souvenirs of events that are repeatable. Rather we need and desire souvenirs of events that are reportable, events whose materiality has escaped us…”

This experience has taught me that sometimes exceptions can be made and we can find beauty and perfection when and where we least expect it. We are the creators and writers of our lives and all that they encompass!

CLOVE CIGARETTES… THE GORGEOUS NEW SACHET

This olfactory curveball led to me another idea… the use of clove cigarettes as sachets for closets and lingerie bureaus. When I did smoke, ages ago, I smoked clove and perfumed cigarettes. To this day if should cross the path of that sweet, spicy aromatic deliciousness, I wax nostalgic. Nothing plunges me back to those precious days of reckless youth, as does the clove cigarette; therefore nothing seems more wondrous than to infuse frilly under-trappings with this exotic, rebellious scent.
